The Multiple Benefits of Landscaping

By Evelyn Alemanni

Landscaping, well designed and maintained, makes a difference in our quality of life, whether we observe the landscape or not. When I visit a new place, or even drive down the street, I notice landscape elements - the ornamental grasses, placement of trees, shrubs in bloom. Good landscaping offers the promise of a happy experience.

The good people at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are doing much more than looking at the shrubbery. They are studying the effects of landscaping on people. Some of their findings include:

  • Green residential landscaping strengthens communities
  • Green activity settings reduce ADHD symptoms
  • Landscaping can reduce inner city crime
  • Views of trees from home can improve girls' self-discipline
  • The right residential landscaping can discourage crime
  • Adding trees near residences can reduce domestic violence
Amazing work, and you can read all the studies at http://lhhl.illinois.edu/.
