Pimp My Park
Pimp My Park

Pimp my park? Really1! No doubt you've watched reality TV shows like "Pimp My Ride" and other shows that change an ugly duckling into a swan in a short matter of time.
In Johannesburg, South Africa, the city has started a program called "Pimp My Park". It's based on a local reality TV show that offers incredible makeovers to homes in a day. In the same vein, the program gathers materials from sponsors who donate things like topsoil, equipment, plants, benches and playground items. Then volunteers are recruited from surrounding neighborhoods.
In a span of ten hours, they can transform an empty field into a public park complete with trails, playgrounds, shade trees and garden areas. Simply amazing.
Maybe there's a vacant lot in your town that you can transform, maybe even temporarily until it gets a better use. Or maybe a local park can be improved with new plantings that could even come from divisions of perennials in your yard. Work with your municipal leaders and see what kind of magic you can make in your local parks.
