National Day Of Care
by Evelyn Alemanni
Saturday, January 19 is the National Day of CARE, when people across the nation are invited to show their CARE for their communities. What a great connection with the tenets of America in Bloom (AIB), whose participants show CARE for their community every day of the year in many very special ways, many of them documented in AIB's acclaimed book, "Ten Years of Best Ideas".
In Fayetteville, Arkansas, volunteers from a prison are helping to plant many crates of bulbs donated by Brent and Becky's Bulbs under the supervision of Cindi Cope.
In Coshocton, Ohio, a tree commission has been established and is working on policies to protect the town's fabulous tree canopy.
In Elfin Forest, California, this rural community is celebrating the completion of a pipeline project that decimated the main road through the community for more than a year with an "incredible monument makeover day". Each road in the community (all private except for the main road) is marked with a custom-designed entry monument. The event was organized by the local town council with help from its trails committee. The local water district (responsible for the pipeline project), OMWD, funded mulch and drought-tolerant plants as well as narcissus bulbs which will naturalize and are resistant to the local nemesis - deer, rabbits, and gophers. (Source was easytogrowbulbs.com.) They also purchased seeds from seedcoseeds.com - a mix of California poppies, lupines, and blue-eyed grass. They even provided coffee and donuts for the volunteers, and some of their staff assisted to help get things going.
Residents donated cactus, aloes and succulents to plant alongside the monuments, as well as their Saturday morning to get everything planted and perfected. Now they're praying for rain to get everything off to a good start.
No matter what you do on Saturday January 19, remember that every day is a day of caring, and you can make a difference in your community in countless ways. America in Bloom is here to help. Also remember that registration for the 2013 program closes on February 28, 2013.
Please check back in a month or two - we'll post photos of our road monuments.
