My town's prettier than yours....
By Evelyn Alemanni
Towns compete in all kinds of ways... who has the better high school sports teams, who has the nicer shops, happier residents, on and on.
Kirkwood, Missouri was the winner of the community involvement criteria award in 2008. Since then, they've been bragging about their accomplishments to their neighboring town of Webster Groves. Well, this year, Webster Groves is participating in the America in Bloom program, and true to form, they have challenged Kirkwood to a plantoff. Who can plant the most? Who can develop the most eye-catching designs? Whose volunteers can deadhead better...faster...more accurately?
What a fun concept, and one that you can adapt to your town and its neighboring communities. Challenge them to a plantoff and watch the "games" begin.
By the way, during our national awards and symposium (details are at www.americainbloom.org), you'll have a chance to tour both Kirkwood and Webster Groves and vote for the winner.
...Happy planting.
